Ángel Daniel is nine years old and lives in the province of Holguín. He lives with his mother, his guardian and his older sister.

His mother works as a self-employed person in a small kiosk. His guardian is currently unemployed. The family has a low income.

Doctors have diagnosed Ángel Daniel with severe hydronephrosis of the left kidney. With hydronephrosis, urine cannot drain properly from the kidney. As a result, the renal pelvis enlarges. This can cause damage to the kidney.

Angel Daniel also has chronic asthma and is malnourished. According to his mother, he has a poor appetite. He is ill often and has a low immunity.

Ángel Daniel has already had several medical examinations. Yet the doctors still do not know what treatment he needs. It is also not yet clear whether he needs an operation.

An initial assessment of the available medical information shows that prompt action is important. Without prompt and proper treatment, his kidney function may deteriorate further. In a severe situation, renal dialysis may become necessary.

In kidney dialysis, the kidneys can no longer sufficiently filter the blood. A machine then takes over part of this function. The patient is often connected to this machine via a catheter. Kidney dialysis is a difficult and invasive treatment, especially for a young child.

The attending physicians and medical specialists must determine the precise risks and the next steps.

Angel Daniel needs to have an intravenous urogram. The Spanish name for this examination is urograma descendente. This examination provides information about how the kidneys work and the drainage of urine.

Following this examination, a medical specialist must assess the results. The specialist can then determine what treatment Ángel Daniel needs.

This test is currently not available in Holguín. Therefore, it must be determined which hospital outside the province can perform the test.

The costs must also be determined. These concern the costs of the medical examination, the assessment by a specialist, transport, and potentially a temporary stay outside Holguín.

Ángel Daniel's mother is urgently seeking help. She can see that her son has serious health problems. The family cannot afford the necessary medical care and other costs themselves.

Stichting Amistad con Cuba is investigating, together with a local volunteer, what medical steps are required. We are trying to determine in which hospital Ángel Daniel can be examined. We are also looking into what the total costs are.

Once this information is available, Stichting Amistad con Cuba can determine what assistance is possible.
