From a holiday in Cuba to a mission
Not a map. Not a country. No politics. But people.
Sometimes something small begins, without you knowing what it will ultimately become. For me, it started with a trip to Cuba. No plan, no mission – just curiosity.
But what I found there would not let me go.
I didn't see “the country of Cuba” as you see it on the news. I saw people. People with immense warmth, an openness that touches you, but also people who have to live daily with shortages. Things that we take for granted are often not available there. Medicines, basic goods, simple hygiene products – they are not certainties.
Pueblo Nuevo
During my stay in Holguín, and particularly in the Pueblo Nuevo district, that realisation hit home. You're no longer watching from a distance. You're right in the thick of it. You speak to people. You see situations up close.
And then something happens.
You can no longer “unsee” it.
Holiday
What began as a holiday turned into a first, small aid effort. No grand plan, no organisation – just doing what was possible at that moment. But it was precisely then that the realisation dawned that this needed to be more than a one-off action.
Foundation
Back in the Netherlands, it wouldn't let me go.
The question became simple:
What if we can do this structurally?
What if we could offer help in a fair, transparent way, directly and controlled?
This is how the idea came about for Stichting Amistad con Cuba.
No politics
A foundation with no political agenda. Without complicated stories. Only focused on what really matters: helping people.
We believe that help can start small, but feel big. That a gesture, however simple, can truly make a difference in someone's daily life.
This is not a story about a country.
This is a story about connection.
Friendship changes lives
