‘Without support or resources, but with faith’: the story of Yariel Tamayo, a single father in Bayamo who found a helping hand

Yariel Tamayo Rodríguez's life reflects the silent struggle that many Cuban fathers face daily. With two minor children, including little Alan Yariel Tamayo, who is only one year old, this single father carries an enormous responsibility on his shoulders, without being able to count on a support network.
“The children’s mother isn't currently able to look after them,” Yariel explains, his voice breaking but without any resentment. His sole income comes from odd jobs, earning him around 2,000 Cuban pesos a month. That amount isn't even enough to cover Alan’s basic nutritional needs. He requires milk, cereals, and other essential foods for his growth.
When the situation became untenable, Yariel turned to the Amistad con Cuba Foundation with a request for help.
After the foundation was made aware of his situation, it was decided to take immediate action. Thanks to the support of donors and the dedication of volunteers, humanitarian aid was organised to alleviate the difficult circumstances of this family, at least temporarily.
Solidarity travelled many miles to reach Bayamo. One of the foundation's volunteers, Day, cycled approximately five kilometres to collect the donations and take them to the meeting point. There, a private driver, who is not affiliated with the foundation, selflessly offered his car and time to transport the aid to Yariel's home.
An anonymous gesture, but of inestimable value.
“The man was under no obligation, and yet he did it. I'll never forget that,” Yariel said with deep gratitude.
Thanks to this chain of solidarity, little Alan received food, and the family also received clothing and shoes.
“I have no words to express my gratitude. This is not just food or clothing; it’s the realisation that I am not alone. That there are people who don’t know me, yet care about my children,” he said emotionally, hugging Alan.
Stichting Amistad con Cuba reaffirms its commitment to the most vulnerable families on the island. All forms of aid are possible thanks to people who donate, volunteers who dedicate their time and energy, and engaged citizens who seek no recognition but transform their empathy into concrete actions.
Today, Yariel looks to the future with a bit more hope. Raising two children alone, amidst so many difficulties, remains an enormous task. But when helping hands appear – on a bicycle or behind the wheel of a car – the road suddenly feels less steep.
